"PVO has improved my knowledge and understanding of systems and the policies that impact our families. Without PVO I wouldn’t have secured affordable child care. PVO was there when I didn’t have anywhere to turn. PVO said "there's a way." It wasn't an easy way, but it was a way to improve my life and the lives of others."
Parent Voices Oakland has a rich history of engaging communities in generative dialogue about policy solutions. Our organization fundamentally uplifts and integrates the lived experiences of families and individuals impacted by social and economic inequity.
Leadership development is regarded as a foundational and ongoing practice that ensures the sustainability of our organization and drives our campaign work. PVO develops member-leader capacity by providing authentic experiential learning opportunities in the field, which are supported by popular education based workshops, an intensive leadership training series, and trauma-informed healing circles (we utilize the Be Present empowerment model). PVO uses an anti-oppression framework that acknowledges the lived reality of our members to build critical thinking skills and analysis.
